On October 7th, 2019, the Swedish Karolinska Institute announced in Stockholm that it would award the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for three scientists. One of the laureates, Gregg L. Semenza, an American scientist, had an indissoluble bound and deep friendship with University of Science and Technology of China(USTC).

Gregg L. Semenza, born in 1956, is a professor of the School of Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University. He became the founder of modern hypoxia research in 1992 because of the discovery of hypoxia inducible factor (HIF1). Since hypoxia and oxidative stress are the pathological and physiological basis of many important diseases, his work has a significant impact on the research of oncology and cardiovascular disease.

Prof. TIAN Zhigang awarded the 2012 Einstein Professor of CAS for Prof. Semenza.

As early as June 2012, Prof. Semenza visited USTC with the invitation of Prof. ZHANG Huafeng and made an academic report entitled Regulation of Oxygen Homeostasis and Major Human Diseases. Prof. TIAN Zhigang, the fomer Dean of the School of Life Sciences, presided over the conference and awarded Prof. Semenza the 2012 Einstein Professor of CAS in recognition of his tremendous contributions to the frontier scientific field.
