Fire benefits human beings while causes hazard to life and property. Aimed to encourage children to participate in science and deliver a better understanding of fire, science researchers from State Key Laboratory of Fire Science (SKLFS) at the University of Science and Technology of China and other staff from the University press set a science popularization activity at the affiliated primary school of the University on October 19th.
Warmly welcomed by the president and students at school, JI Jie, professor of SKLFS, made a lively science report for the students.
A series of interesting experiments, including a small-scale fire whirl demonstration, candle fire experiment, spinning paper cups experiment, fire on the palm experiment and more, aroused strong interest and plentiful questions from the audience.

The event also set up a VR experience of fireground self-rescue and virtual fire evacuation drills to help students protect themselves better. After the lecture, students lined up in long lines and enthusiastically participated in the experience.

Training on scrutinizing potential fire loopholes and fire science book exhibition also attracted many attentions. The SKLFS and the University press donated more than 500 carefully selected books to the students.
This is the second year for SKLFS to present the theme activity, Be a Volunteer and Popularize Science in Primary School. The event received a good response at Hefei Wanghu Primary School last year, and researchers are striving to make it an influential brand activity in the future.
