From Nov 3rd to 4th , University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) held the 16th USTC-CityU PhD Student Workshop & Presentation of Peter Ho Conference Scholarships.

Prof. GONG Liuzhu, vice dean of the Graduate School of USTC, highly praised the fruitful collaboration between USTC and City University of Hong Kong (CityU) over the past decade, which has made great academic advancement and provided new impetus for social innovation and regional economic development. He hoped that the workshop, under the theme of "Innovation, Collaboration, and Win-Win", would serve as a bridge for academic exchanges between the two institutions.

Prof. RU Zhiyuan, dean of CityU Graduate School, noted in his address, the collaboration between the two strong universities set a great example of collaborative research and student cultivation between CityU and mainland universities. Also, it provided a fine paradigm for the integration and exchange between higher education institutions. With USTC-CityU Joint PhD Collaboration Scheme approaching its 20th anniversary, Prof. RU conveyed CityU's commitment to continuing their close collaboration with USTC to contribute to scientific research and societal development.

Then the award ceremony of Peter Ho Conference Scholarships followed, Prof. LI Guoyao, vice dean of Graduate School of CityU announced the winners and offered them certificates.
Prof. XIE Min from CityU's Department of Systems Engineering, Prof. LIU Hefu from School of Management of USTC, and Prof. JU Xiaoyu from the State Key Laboratory of Fire Science of USTC were also invited to deliver thematic reports on the latest cutting-edge research in related areas respectively.
Besides these presentations, there were also 13 parallel sessions of different themes including applied mathematics, life science, mechanical engineering, environmental science, computer science, and management and finance. A total of 103 doctoral students attended the sessions to present oral reports or engage in discussions on their research areas and 22 of them were honored with the "Outstanding Academic Presentation Award".

On the afternoon of Nov. 2, representatives from USTC and CityU held an annual general meeting, during which details of joint training programs, the future format of the workshop, and preparations for the 20th anniversary activities were discussed.
Besides, on the evening of Nov. 2nd, there was an information session for 2024 USTC-CityU Joint PhD Collaboration Scheme, with over 270 people participating both online and offline.

For 18 years, the two universities have steadfastly advanced joint training. Graduates of the program, equipped with an international academic perspective and outstanding research platforms, have achieved fruitful results, exerting a broad societal impact and earning the joint training program a commendable reputation.
